A Ewe and Lambs Sheltering from a Storm“. A superb and highly atmospheric Victorian oil on canvas by British artist James Charles Morris, signed and dated 1861 lower left.

The beautifully composed scene depicts a ewe and her two lambs sheltering amongst the rocks of a dramatic Highland landscape as an approaching storm gathers over the distant mountains.

Morris was particularly accomplished in his depiction of animals and rural landscapes, and the present work is a fine example of the romantic tradition of 19th-century British animal painting. The carefully observed sheep, sweeping mountainous backdrop and changing light give the composition considerable atmosphere and narrative.

Works by James Charles Morris have been offered through major international auction houses including Christie’s, with sheep and Highland subjects forming an important part of his known body of work.

The painting is presented in an exceptionally impressive ornate gilt frame, complementing the composition beautifully and bringing the overall dimensions to more than one metre wide.

A substantial and highly decorative original Victorian painting with tremendous presence- particularly well suited to a country house, period interior, drawing room or traditional collection.
