A finely executed and exceptionally large Victorian oil on canvas by British landscape painter Adam Barland (c.1843–1919), monogrammed and dated 1868.

The sweeping composition depicts figures travelling through an expansive mountainous landscape, with woodland, water and a beautifully luminous atmospheric sky. The scale and romantic treatment give the work considerable presence.

Barland was an accomplished 19th-century landscape painter whose works have been offered by major international auction houses including Christie’s and are represented in public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The painting is presented in an impressive and richly ornamented gilt composition frame, creating a substantial statement piece.
