“Church and Cottage in a Landscape”. A charming and highly decorative Victorian oil on canvas by British artist Cedric Gray, prominently signed and dated 1890 lower left.
The beautifully detailed composition depicts an idyllic rural landscape, with a flock of sheep grazing beside a winding country path, a traditional thatched cottage nestled amongst the trees and the tower of a village church rising beyond.
Painted with considerable attention to detail, the work captures an idealised vision of the late Victorian English countryside. Particularly attractive are the richly observed trees and foreground vegetation, which frame the distant church and lead the eye through the landscape
At over one metre wide in its frame, the painting has substantial presence and is presented in an impressive, richly moulded gilt frame with decorative foliate corner ornament.
