A fine, large 19th-century oil painting by William Shayer (1787-1879), one of the most collected English painters of rustic and coastal life. The composition depicts fisherfolk on a rocky shoreline beside beached boats, with the sea breaking beyond and a small dog accompanying the figures, a characteristic and recurring motif in Shayer’s work.
The palette, figure types, and atmospheric handling are entirely consistent with Shayer’s mature coastal scenes of the mid-19th century. Particularly appealing are the luminous sky, animated sea, and carefully observed figures, all hallmarks of the artist’s best period.
The painting is presented in an impressive original 19th-century gilt Rococo Revival frame, which complements the work beautifully and enhances its decorative impact.
